Last updated: Nov. 5. Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov. 26.

Thanksgiving is fast approaching, which means roughly 46 million turkeys will soon land on American tables. And while a turkey can look like a bargain by the pound, these birds are big. The average Thanksgiving turkey weighs about 16 pounds, so an organic bird at $5.99 a pound comes to nearly $96 before you've bought a single side.

The good news: Shop around, and you can pay a fraction of that. The cheapest turkey I've found so far is Target's frozen Good & Gather bird at $0.79 per pound, which works out to $12.64 for a 16-pound turkey. Walmart and WinCo are close behind at $0.84 per pound. If you'd rather skip the turkey, Field Roast's 32-ounce Hazelnut Cranberry Roast is $20.99 at Whole Foods and feeds eight.

I'm tracking turkey and vegan main deals across the Portland area and updating this page as new ads come out. Frozen birds are already under $1 a pound at Target, Walmart, WinCo, Fred Meyer and QFC, and Costco has fresh turkeys for $0.99 a pound. If you don't have a Costco membership, the cheapest fresh turkey is $2.49 a pound at Trader Joe's and Albertsons/Safeway. Trader Joe's also has the cheapest fresh organic turkey at $3.99 a pound. Several of the best sale prices end Nov. 10, while WinCo's free turkey offer doesn't start until Nov. 18.

Trader Joe’s is the only store in town I’ve found advertising kosher turkeys. (Bryan M. Vance/Stumptown Savings)

Looking for a kosher turkey? Trader Joe's expects fresh Glatt kosher turkeys on Nov. 12 for $3.49/lb., or $55.84 for a 16-pound bird. Grocery Outlet didn't have turkeys in stock when I checked on Nov. 5.

How I Compared These Deals

Prices come from weekly ads, store websites and in-store checks, and I note the most recent check at the top of this page. Turkey costs use a 16-pound bird, the average size for Thanksgiving. Stock and prices can vary by location, so check with your store.

See a better deal? Snap a photo and email it to [email protected] with where you spotted it and any terms or limits, and I'll verify it and add it.

Keep This Work Going

Every story we publish takes hours of reporting, fact-checking and checking prices by hand. Stumptown Savings is Portland’s only cost-of-living newsroom, and it’s run by one person. There’s no corporate owner and no grocery chain paying the bills. Fewer than 4 in 100 readers are members, and that support is what keeps this reporting free for everyone in a city where food keeps getting more expensive.

If our reporting has saved you money even once, a membership pays for itself in a single grocery trip.
