More than a century of Portland grocery history is coming to an end. This morning, the team at Sheridan Fruit Company announced that the iconic SE Portland grocer will close its doors for the final time on Friday, Feb. 13, 2026.
A Century on the Corner
Founded in 1916, Sheridan has survived world wars, the Great Depression, and the rise of massive supermarket chains. For 110 years, the warehouse-style market served as a vital link between Oregon farmers and Portland kitchens. Known for its sprawling bulk bins, world-class meat counter, and high-quality produce, it wasn’t just a store — it was a landmark of the inner Southeast industrial district.
While the closure announcement was met with shock by loyal customers, signs of struggle had been mounting (something we’ve documented for months at Stumptown Savings). Recent reporting from KGW and KOIN highlighted that the family-owned business was facing significant financial headwinds. Despite a loyal following, the grocer reportedly struggled with rising operational costs and a shifting retail landscape that has been unkind to independent markets.
According to the company’s announcement, the decision to close was not made lightly.
"While we fought hard to stay, we choose to focus now on the gratitude we have for our journey," the company shared in a statement. This follows months of community speculation regarding the store's future as it navigated what KOIN described as "business struggles" common to aging independent retailers.
The Soul of Sheridan

The news hits particularly hard for the local food system. Sheridan was a champion for local growers, often stocking items that larger chains wouldn't carry. But beyond the food, the team emphasized that the people were the heart of the operation.
"To our staff: You are the soul of Sheridan," the team wrote in their farewell message. "Your hard work and passion defined us."
How to Say Goodbye
For those looking to walk the aisles one last time, the window is short. The store will operate with limited hours for its final two days:
Thursday, Feb. 12: open until 5 p.m.
Friday, Feb. 13: 9 a.m. – 5:p.m. (Final Day)
For 110 years, Sheridan made Portland a little more delicious. As they prepare to dim the lights on Friday, they leave behind a legacy of community and a deep void in the city’s food scene.
